Sarah Lennox

Lady Sarah Napier (née Lennox, later Bunbury; 14 February 1745 – 26 August 1826) was a British aristocrat who achieved fame for her scandalous extramarital affairs. One of the famous Lennox sisters, she acquired a reputation for being a great society beauty and was the frequent subject of gossip and press coverage.

Sarah and her family inherited great wealth through their descent from King Charles II. During her first London season, the future King George III fell in love with her and she became a political pawn of factions hoping to influence him. He was eventually persuaded that the match was impossible, so Sarah instead married Charles Bunbury; their relationship was troubled and she scandalously had a child and eloped with her lover, Lord William Gordon.

Bunbury eventually divorced her, a rarity for the time period. Her subsequent fall from grace led to a 12-year exile from fashionable society. She later wed George Napier in what would be a happy marriage that produced eight children, three of whom became prominent officers in the British Army. Multiple volumes of her correspondence were later published, and in 1999 she was portrayed by the actress Jodhi May in a television series about her family.
