He became a regular columnist at the Irish Times and Irish Independent, while authoring some works on non-fiction, and developed The Whoseday Book which raised 3 million euros for charity. He has also been a member of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

Waters was an unsuccessful independent candidate in the 2020 Irish general election for the Dún Laoghaire constituency. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the Midlands–North-West constituency at the 2024 European Parliament election.
